Steel Building vs Wood Building
Written by admin on August 3, 2011 – 5:48 pmWhen man started building, the first material that he chose was wood. After all, forests were plentiful, trees were everywhere and it just looked rustic and lovely when the building was done. However, then came steel which is fast gaining in popularity. Here is a comparison between the two materials when it comes to building construction.
In terms of being environmentally friendly, steel buildings definitely win hands down. After all, you do not need to chop down any trees to make steel buildings. Also, steel is manufactured and fabricated under the most stringent energy efficient processes. The same can’t be said of wood where the logging of trees definitely causes a lot of damage to our environment.
Furthermore, steel is 100% recyclable and still can be used even after recycling. Wood, as we know, is prone to rotting and once it is past its sell by date, you won’t be able to find any good uses for it. Wood is not as durable or long lasting as steel, either. Steel is good for the environment and extremely durable.
In terms of durability, steel can withstand a combination of different types of materials. It is not combustible so it will not evaporate easily. On the other hand, we know that wood is high flammable when it comes to fire and other hazardous materials. In terms of the risks involved, steel definitely has the advantage over the usage of wood.
Steel is also stronger than wood which simply means that you can build higher buildings with steel without worrying that it will fall down or collapse in the near future. Wood also requires the usage of beams across the building to ensure that it lasts longer which is a hindrance especially if you need a building with wide open spaces. This means you need to use more materials when it comes to wood to build something which is of the same height.
All in all, there are so many advantages that steel have to offer to building construction. Wood might be where it all started but steel is the way of the future.
